You’re in Valle d’Aosta. Here you can see all the flowering species native to this area.
Learn their names and inhale their aroma: you’ll find that each flower has a story to tell. The Leontopodium alpinum, is the symbol of these mountains, but it comes from far away, in the highland deserts of Central Asia. Or the Lilium martagon, whose common name is lady’s curl, because of its elegantly curved flowers.
And then there is the Campanula thyrsoides, with those funny corncob-like inflorescences and yellow bell-shaped flowers. The Paeonia officinalis is precious, because it is found only in two inaccessible areas of the lower Valle d’Aosta. And more, the Artemisie. One in particular, Artemisia genipi, lends its aroma to Genepy, a sweet digestive liqueur. Gentiana lutea also has digestive properties, but be careful: it is very much like Veratrum album, which is poisonous.
